About PSU Cycling
PSU Cycling is the official cycling team of Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.
Our mission is to unite individuals who share a common passion for cycling, whether you are a seasoned racer, recreational commuter, or are brand new to the sport.
We support undergraduate and graduate students of all abilities and cycling interests while promoting cycling year round through participation in road, track, cyclocross, and mountain biking events. Any individual attending Portland State University is welcome to join PSU Cycling and take advantage of all the benefits it has to offer; from race and tour support, training tips, advice, or sponsorship deals. Our sole funding source is Portland State University and through PSU Rec Sports, we are able to send our racers to Northwest and Collegiate National Championship events.
New Riders
Each year, many new riders join PSU Cycling, the majority having never raced before. In the fall you can expect to learn things like basic pack-riding skills, how to train, and what to expect during the race season. Winter quarter, our rides get more serious. When spring quarter come around, we are ready for racing.
Even though the primary focus of PSU Cycling is racing, the atmosphere is laid back and the most important thing is to have fun. And don't worry if you have never raced, most of us started cycling right here at PSU, too.
If you're interested in joining, check out the Join page. And if you're joining mid-season, not a problem. Come to a Saturday group ride or a team meeting and we'll get you up to speed.
Group Rides
Group training rides are announced over the club email list, but check out the calendar to see what regularly scheduled rides are going on.
"No Drop Rule" - All PSU rides follow the "no drop rule". Every ride will have various stops to regroup and make sure everyone is still there or accounted for.
What to bring:
1. Helmet - YOU MUST WEAR A HELMET. No exceptions, if you show up without a helmet, you can't ride with the team that day. It's for your own safety.
2. A working Road Bike - If your bike needs a tune up, stop by the Bike Co-Op and they will help you fix it up. Mountain bikes and cyclocross bikes are acceptable as long as you are not drastically slowing the group down. The group road rides will always favor road bikes. Check out one of the Social Rides or Cross Practice if you are interested in riding the other bikes.
3. Riding Clothes - Spandex can be scary but in time you'll learn to love it. If you don't have good riding clothes yet, workout clothes are fine as long as you are comfortable and warm. Better yet, contact us about getting some team clothing.
4. Flat Repair kit - Inner Tube, Patch Kit and a Pump. Try changing a tube in your living room once or twice before you have to do it out on the road. If you need to purchase these supples, stop by Revolver Bikes and order what you need.
5. Water and a Snack - Rides usually last a couple of hours so it's important to have some food and drink to keep you going. Make sure you get in on the next Clif Bar order and stock up on what you like.
